Summary

36" multisync HD CRT by Hitachi, designed to be used with the then-new DVD technology and HD broadcasting of the time. This set uses a Toshiba "multimedia" tube model with a lower TVL compared to the previous HD model, but still very high end. Can accept SD signals and linedouble them to 480p. The set also natively displays 480p at 60hz and 72hz, 600p at 60hz, and 1080i.

Notes

Despite it looking almost identical to other SD and HD Hitachi sets of the time, this set can be identified by the "ULTRASCAN HD" logo in the upper left corner.

The set can be adjusted just like a PC monitor would, with a picture options in the menu to control raster size, shape, and position.

Both the front and back VGA inputs share the same video line. There is an option in the standard menu to alternate between them.

VGA is very clean with no processing. However, component has some "luma shadow" going on, implying that it may be processing the signal as 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, likely for DVD. Over component the raster is compressed to 16:9, and it appears noticeably brighter than in 4:3.

240p/480i are linedoubled to 480p with reportedly low latency, if not any at all. One owner of this model reported that lightguns worked in 240p.

This set can even be operated in tandem with a PC over a PS2 connection.
