Summary

Mitsubishi's Diamond Pro 2070SB is among the highest rated CRT monitors ever produced. With a 140kHz max horizontal scan rate, it is capable of extremely high resolutions and/or frame rates. It is an excellent monitor for modern PC games. Commonly used resolutions are 2048x1560 at 86Hz, 1600x1200 at 109Hz, 1440x1080 at 120Hz, or 1024x768 at 160Hz.

Notes

This monitor has been rebranded several times (sometimes with a case redesign), and was also sold as the NEC FP2141SB, HP P1230, LaCie Electron 22 Blue IV, and SGI C220.

Other features are a 4-port USB 2.0 hub (useful for connecting a mouse and keyboard), dual VGA inputs, and a "super bright" mode that temporarily increases contrast.

The 2070SB usually suffers from linearity issues, especially in the top 1/2 inch of the screen. This is not usually noticeable in 3D games but can be distracting for desktop use.

Taking full advantage of this monitor's capabilities on a modern graphics card requires a very high bandwidth DAC, capable of at least 534 mHz. This will allow it to display 2880x2160 at 60hz, which is close to its maximum resolution. There are three known devices that meet these specifications, all using the Synaptics VMM2322 chip: Sunix DPU3000, Icy Box IB-SPL1031, and DeLock 87685. As of late 2023, these are out of production and must be found on the secondary market. Currently, the most reliable option is the Startech DP2VGAHD20, which has a pixel clock of ~375 mHz.
