Summary

27" curved screen TV from Philips. Similar in design to JVC's D Series, the 27PS55 has excellent picture quality, especially through component video. The image is clean and sharp, with no edge enhancement artifacts.

It comes in two variants - the S121 with the M8 chassis, and the S321 with the T8 chassis. Both use the same tube and case, with minor variations to the main board. Most importantly, the S321 has a different set of firmware is much easier to calibrate.

The 27PS55 S321, unlike the S121 version, has a service menu and can be adjusted using a standard remote. For this reason, the S321 is the better of these two TVs.

Like many Philips TVs, this model is capable of syncing to 50hz. Pal video will still display in black and white through the composite and S-Video inputs, but will be in color if you use component.

Many Philips TVs, including this model, are prone to oxidized microswitches on the front panel. This causes the buttons to perform the wrong function when pressed. This can be fixed by replacing the switches, or avoided by using the remote instead.

This TV does not have an input button nor can you use a remote with an input button to switch between the inputs like Sony and Sharp TVs can. Instead it uses the channel up and down buttons to cycle through all the channels 1 - 125, FRONT, SVHS/AV2, AV1/CVI. It is recommended to use the settings menu to mark all number channels as skipped except for 3, 4, FRONT, SVHS/AV2, AV1/CVI. You can do this by using the remote; Press menu then down 3 times to "install", right, down 3 times, then right again and mark channel 1,2, 5-125 as skipped. This way the remote and TV's physical Channel up and down buttons will only cycle between Channels 3,4, FRONT, SVHS/AV2 and AV1/CVI. The remote number pad can still be used to go to any desired channel if needed. SVHS is S-Video and CVI is Component Video Input.
