Notes

This set has adjustments for the following:

  • NTSC 3.58 chroma trap (aka notch filter) for composite video
  • Video noise reduction (likely a low-pass filter)
  • Bass and treble adjustment

There were two sets that used this chassis. The featured example is the earlier set introduced in 1987 with a digital RGB input. But later on in 1989 they introduced the VT-290S with an s-video connection. (On the front of the set, the RGB switch toggle is omitted.)

No matter which variant you have, you can mod either set to have both inputs. Speaking of which...

RGB Mod

If your set has a digital RGB input, modding it for analog RGB is quite easy. The digital RGB conversion is directly behind the DE-9 input on the back; the wires that come off of that go directly into the analog RGB input on the main board. You can bypass the digital RGB conversion by simply desoldering those wires and tapping them directly into the NTSC decoder: red is red, white is blue, and yellow is green. The other yellow wire below it is sync. (See example.) Its that simple! However, if your set lacks the digital RGB input, you may need to get a switch to make the set engage into RGB mode.
