Summary

Sony's SSM series monitors were variants of their lower end PVM models, targeted towards the CCTV & security industry and often with a reduced feature set. The SSM-14L1 was one the last models produced, and is based on the PVM-14L1. The only difference between the two appears to be that the front bezel of the SSM variant has been painted light gray; otherwise they are identical. It has two composite video and S-Video inputs, and is equivalent to the PVM-14N5U from the previous generation. The tube, yoke, and flyback are the same as the PVM-14L2.

Notes

While this monitor does not have RGB or component video, the jungle chip does have RGB input pins and it can be modified to accept it. A guide to the mod can be found at Martin Hejnfelt's website "Immerhax".

Flyback Compatibility

All of the standard definition 14" and 20" L series PVMs use the same model of flyback transformer (NX-4525). This includes the PVM-14L1, 20L1, 14L2, and 20L2 (plus the medical and SSM variants). They are compatible with each other, so any model in the series can be used as the donor for another. However, the 14" models do not use the integrated focus pot, as the focus and screen voltages are generated elsewhere.

When transferring the flyback from a 14 to a 20" model, it is necessary to add a focus lead. This can be taken from the old flyback of the recipient monitor. If that isn't available, a length of solid core 20 gauge wire with a rating of 20 kV can be used. To install it, push it into the hole leading to the uppermost flyback pot and it should lock in place. It's important to use solid core wire, or else it may not fit securely.
