Repair Notes

  • Unit was completely dead. The SMPS regulator ICX3431 was shorted on pins 2, 3, & 4. Replacing it resulted in high voltage for a few seconds and then the replacement smoked and was shorted on pins 2 and 3. Testing more components in the SMPS revealed that RX3433 was 10 Ω instead of 15 Ω, RX3434 was open instead of 43 Ω, and C3434 had 6.5 Ω ESR. The switching transistor Q3431 had a base to emitter voltage drop of 1.44V whereas base to collector was .66V (Zenith part 121-1264-01A, cross-referenced as an MPSA42; NTE287 is also an NPN 300 V transistor and is commonly listed as the MPSA42 replacement). A stock MPSA42 has roughly equivalent voltage drops. Replacing Q3431 with an MPSA42, as well as the rest of the components listed fixed the power on issue.
  • Electolytic CX3451 was found to be open, though replacing had no observable effect.
  • Unit would emit a high pitched hiss and have an extremely distorted picture somewhat similar looking to loss of horizontal sync. The hiss would go away if switched to the AUX input with no signal. 22uF C2212 was found to be open which was on the jungle's Horiz VCC line.
  • 480i was was flickery and noticeably doubled with a vertical offset of about 10 lines between the two fields, though 240p was correctly displayed. Replacing the vert IC, pump up diode, and all vert electrolytics had no effect. I reflowed joints along the sync in line, and then the symptom was reduced to a 1-line jitter which is still distracting. OSD wasn't jumpy when on a channel with no signal so it appears to work correctly in 480i when just using the free-running oscillator. I used cold spray and spraying in the area of Q3403 made the issue worse, even making 240p jumpy. I nudged film capacitor C4121 stright up as it was leaning over just so I could more clearly access the compOnents by it, and then the symptom was gone except for a few seconds at startup. I reflowed the area but the legs of CX3445 (smoothing capacitor on the 12v rail) would not reflow, apparently due to leaky electrolytic fluid. It tested bad out of circuit but appeared to have fine ESR in-circuit.

Notes

Horizontal size coil and vertical size pot internally. No vertical position or vertical linearity adjustments.
