Table of Contents
All dimensions listed on this page are given relative to the vertical (mounted) orientation of the speaker, not its horizontal (tabletop) orientation.
Note that all of these speakers should be bought as matched left/right pairs, be careful when buying a set so that you don't end up with two lefts or two rights. Some models can have their orientation flipped if you disassemble them, but will still look "wrong" with the Sony logo on the wrong side etc.
Round-Cone Speakers (SS)
All of the speaker models that start with "SS" have traditional round speaker cones inside. They don't necessarily sound better or worse than the square APM cones.
SS-X7A
Dimensions: 183 × 280 × 90 mm (w/h/d)
These are amongst the largest size CRT mounted speakers Sony made (along with the identically-sized APM-X5A listed below, and the SS-X2A). Typically you would pair these with a Sony PVM 2530, 3230, or 2950Q. Their mounting hardware is specifically designed to allow the speakers to fold properly on these models.
There is a 3d print available for the mounting hardware and screws.
SS-X6A
Dimensions: 100 x 180 x 80 mm (w/h/d).
These are a smaller form-factor that still have a two-speaker (one woofer one tweeter) configuration. They sound great and fit perfectly on the smaller 20" PVMs. Typically used on a Sony PVM 2030 but will also fit perfectly fine on a KV-20XBR, KV-25XBR, or Profeel (KX-1901A, etc). The Sony logo is in a horizontal orientation because they could also be detached from the CRT and laid on their side.
SS-X2A
Dimensions: 159 x 276 x 127 mm (w/h/d)
These are a larger version of the X1A intended for the larger Profeel models such as the KX-2501A but will also fit perfectly fine on all of the models compatible with the X7A. You can see them sitting in the top left corner of this ProFeel group photo, which gives you a better idea of their relative size.
SS-X1A
Dimensions: 113 x 201 x 83 mm (w/h/d)
These are identical to the X6A but in silver. They were meant to pair with the Sony ProFeel line of TVs like the KX-1211 or KX-1901A but will also fit perfectly fine on all of the models compatible with the X6A.
Square-Cone Speakers (APM)
All of the speaker models which start with "APM" use Sony-proprietary square cones for the speakers. They have a very unique appearance and fantastic 80's aesthetic to them.
APM-X5A
Dimensions: 183 × 280 × 90 mm (w/h/d)
These are the same size and power as the SS-X7A but use Sony's high quality APM square speakers. Typically you would pair these with a Sony PVM 2530, 3230, or 2950Q. Their mounting hardware is specifically designed to allow the speakers to fold properly on these models.
There is a 3d print available for the mounting hardware and screws.
APM-X3U (unbranded, no model number label)
Dimensions: 115 x 215 x 135 mm (w/h/d)
These were included with Sony's KX-20XBR, 25XBR, and 25DXR CRTs. They are supposed to have a large foot-like piece on the mounting hardware as seen in the image below. They do not have any identifying marks on them other than "APM", but the XBR parts list denotes them as "APM-X3U".
These speakers are total garbage and you should avoid them. The "no-model no-brand" appearance is indicative of their build quality. Despite their dual-speaker appearance on the outside, these speakers only have a single woofer inside with no tweeter. Additionally, the APM woofer is extremely poor quality which uses foam instead of fabric for the cone material - this foam rots away over time. If you buy these speakers, assume you will need to replace the speaker woofer inside with something else.
The service manual for the APM-X3U can typically be found appended to the online scans of the service manuals for the TVs that they came with.
You can mount these APM-X3U speakers to the PVM 2030 / 2530 using this Thingiverse print.
It is unknown if the orientation of these can be flipped via disassembly to convert a right to left or vise-versa.
Mounting Hardware
The screw holes on the sides of PVMs (2030, 2530, 2950Q, 3230, etc) are M4 x 0.7mm thread. Make sure your screws are at least 10mm long.
If your speakers came with a large plastic foot attached to the mounting brace, that's the tabletop foot used for horizontal tabletop installation instead of direct mount to the CRT.
Each type of PVM has a different angle where the screw hole mount location is, which means certain speakers fit certain PVMs better than others. Considerations to be made with how well the speakers will fit the PVM:
- Will the speakers be able to swing fully out to face the viewer?
- Will the speakers be able to fold flat into the side cavity of the PVM when not in use?
- Are the speakers an appropriate size relative to the PVM? (for example large SS-X7A or APM-X5A on a small PVM 2030 will look silly)
