The 27" D-Series was introduced in 1999 with a component input on all models of the series. Over its 5-year run, a number of chassis revisions occurred (as well as a tube change), which have varying impacts on the end-user experience.

The initial tube used in 1999 & 2000 was flatter and slightly finer pitch than later tubes. The yoke was bonded to the tube which prevents rotating it to adjust the tilt, and adjustable convergence rings are absent. Being flatter, the shape of the set's front plastic bezel where it meets the glass is noticeably different, having a beveled edge of uniform width all the way around, unlike later models where the beveled edge which meets the glass has varying width based on the curve of the tube.
The two later tubes can be identified by the suffix after the serial number on the back label of the set - S or SA for Samsung; R, AR, RA, or RAA for Thomson-RCA. While these two later tube options have the same specs as each other, the Thomson-RCA tubes in the 'R' & 'RA' models can have a tendency for the edges of the screen to become out of focus. Adjusting the focus knob on the flyback cannot fix this, as making the edges clearer will make the center out of focus instead. Unlike the Thomson-RCA tubes, the Samsung tubes have an adjustable yoke and adjustable convergence rings.
Component YPbPr Decoding Performance
The quality of the component decoding performance in 27" D-Series sets varies between chassis. Some of the more conspicuous artifacts that may occur when using component YPbPr are gamma luminance errors at certain horizontal transitions, which present as an aberrant darkening between two colors. These errors are the most conspicuous in 1999-2001, but are negligible from 2002-2004.

AV-27DX03 - AV-27DX04
The '02-'05 models do not have the level of gamma luminance errors that previous years have. While they can't be RGB-modded, they have the best component quality of the series.
Composite Decoding Performance
The 2-line comb filter used from '99-'00 has the most severe dot artifacting for 240p content. One small example is the chroma mesh failure or "hanging dots" between magenta and teal on the NTSC color bars - not present on later models.
The 3-line comb used in 2001 produces a less dot artifacting in comparison, but it is still prominent. The 3-line comb used in 2002 onward has slightly more dot artifacting than the original 3-line comb, but not as bad as the 2-line. Using a quality external composite decoder instead1 and sending that to the component input can reduce dot artifacting to a bare minimum, while still maintaining composite color blending.
Vertical Edge Enhancement, which artificially boosts the contrast on the vertical axis at transitions for composite and RF sources, can be disabled in the the service menu starting in 2002 models. To disable in 2001 models requires lifting a resistor. 1999 and 2000 models do not have vertical edge enhancement.
Picture Adjustments
The '99-'00 chassis allow horizontal width and pincushion control in the service menu, unlike later chassis which lack these adjustments. Vertical position is solely controlled by a switch inside the set. Changes to the picture settings will not be remembered unless saved to the Choice picture mode.
Horizontal width and pincushion were removed in 2001 models going forward. Vertical position control was added to the service menu. It was the last year to have a separate power board. Changes to the picture settings will not be remembered unless saved to the Choice picture mode.
From 2002 onward, vertical position can be adjusted with the service menu V PHASE setting, as well as an internal switch. The Choice picture mode has been removed, as picture settings are now automatically saved per picture mode.
Linearity / Horizontal S-Correction
The AV-27D201 under test had fairly noticeable amount of inconsistent horizontal linearity in comparison to the other sets tested (video here), and this has been witnessed on other AV-27D201's as well2. The AV-27D302/R under test had the best/most consistent horizontal linearity of the group. The AV-27D303/S under test had a horizontal linearity narrower in the center than the edges (and the most narrow overall width), but its variance was not as conspicuous as the AV-27D201.
