Summary
27" flat tube consumer TV. Among the last in Panasonic's Tau series, this model was manufactured by Orion instead of Panasonic themselves. While it has a slightly different chassis, it shares most of its basic design (including the jungle chip) with the Toshiba 27AF45.
Manuals
Notes
To see how many hours the unit has been on, first lower the volume to its minimum then press and hold the VOL- button on the set and simultaneously press and hold 6 on the remote. "CRT ON" indicates hours in hexadecimal. To enter the service menu, first lower the volume to its minimum then press and hold the VOL- button on the set and simultaneously press and hold 9 on the remote.
This TV (and some others made by Orion) often has the chroma out of phase with the Luma signal, resulting in blurriness and misaligned colors. This can be corrected in the service menu by adjusting CB DL and CR DL.
Unlike some Orion-built TVs, the A/V inputs can be selected using the channel up/down buttons.
Disabling Velocity Modulation
This TV has a velocity modulation circuit which significantly alters horizontal edge transitions, examples here.
Unfortunately, this cannot be turned off in the user or service menus and must be physically disconnected. To do this, unplug the cable from connector CP852A on the neck board.
Composite 240p Performance
by Eli Krause
For composite decoding this set uses a Toshiba TC90A45FG, a dynamic 2-line digital comb filter introduced in 1997. Depending on the console/revision, dot artifacting ranges from moderate to severe, blending effects may be broken, and edge artifacts are mostly moderate to severe. An example of the many dot artifacts are highlighted in the second picture below in red. If the set has a higher bandwidth input such as s-video or component, then using an external notch filter to decode composite instead and sending that to the set would remove nearly all dot artifacts, blend all dithering patterns, and reduce edge artifacts (guide to using an external notch here).
