Summary

Professional-grade 14" multisync monitor from Sony. Unlike its 20" counterpart, it has built in controls on the sides of the monitor and doesn't require a separate control unit (although it is compatible with the BKM-11R). Sony also released a slimmer standalone version (BVM-D14F1U) that does require a BKM-10R unit to operate.

Unlike their SD-only predecessors (and the subsequent A series), the 14 inch D series BVMs use a simplified design. The chassis is not modular and bears more resemblance to a PVM. It uses smaller sized 100 series input cards, like the D9 BVMs and L series PVMs. It also does not have a functional memory card slot.

The monitor does not have any built in video inputs, and requires an input card to operate (see brochure). It has three card slots, and is commonly found with the BKM-129X (RGB and component video) BKM-142HD (HD SDI), or BKM-120D (SD SDI). For NTSC Composite or S-Video content you need a BKM-127W input card or an external NTSC to YPbPr decoder.

Notes

Basic geometry options are available from the main menu, but access to the full set of service adjustments is locked by a password. Fortunately, there is a backdoor password that can always be used. Go to the "system config", then "maintenance". At the password prompt, enter 53415 using the input select keys, and press "enter".

The front bezel on this monitor is secured at the top and bottom by a set of four plastic clips, and can easily be removed by pulling gently at the corners. The monitor was originally sold with a 4:3 and a 16:9 bezel, but is usually found with just one or the other. The 16:9 bezel is useful for viewing HD video, as it hides the overscan area, but must be removed to play 4:3 standard definition content. If you don't have a 4:3 bezel, the monitor will look somewhat bare but will still work fine.

Like the PVM-14L5 and 14M4U, this monitor has a plastic anti-glare film on the front of the tube. This film is light tinted and serves mostly to reduce glare and protect the glass. If the film is scratched, it can be safely removed without significantly affecting the monitor's appearance.

Multiformat Capability

This monitor is capable of displaying both Standard Definition (SD 240p/480i) and High Definition (HD 480p, 720p, 1080i) signals. This means you can connect HD source devices (for example component consoles like the Gamecube @ 480p, Xbox 360 @ 720p/1080i and PS3 @ 720p/1080i).
