Summary

The GVM 2020 is a unique multisync monitor with a variety of inputs. Sold as a multipurpose broadcast, computer, and presentation monitor, it will display resolutions from standard definition 240p/480i all the way to 800x600 at 60hz. It has inputs for composite video, S-Video, analog RGB, and digital RGB. Geometry controls are located on the front panel, which is especially useful when switching between display resolutions.

It uses the same tube and neck board as the PVM 2030, and has a softer and more natural 480p image than most VGA monitors. However, the pitch of the tube is somewhat coarse for its maximum resolution of 800x600, and some details are lost.

Notes

An earlier model with a black case, the GVM 2000, was released in 1989. The 2020 is identical except for the beige color and one small change to the G3 board near the power supply.

This monitor uses two removable input boards for RGB, one with a DB9 connector and one with 5 BNCs. According to Sony's promotional literature, additional boards would be available in the future to expand the monitor's capabilities. However, these were never produced and this was the end of the GVM product line.

The type of sync that this monitor accepts depends on the input card used. The DB9 input is somewhat selective, and can take either TTL level H/V sync or 75 ohm Csync. The BNC input will accept H/V or Csync at TTL or 75 ohm levels, and is compatible with sync on green. Neither card will take composite video for sync.

The chassis is very complex, with 19 separate PCBs and numerous wire bundles. When servicing this monitor, it's important to take good notes so as to avoid missing connections during reassembly. Likewise, calibration is a long and involved process that requires adjusting more than a dozen trim pots, ideally with the help of an oscilloscope.
