Summary

Sony's L series was the last revision of their PVM lineup. They use the same tubes and yokes as their M series predecessors, but have an updated and modernized chassis design, as well as a redesigned menu interface and the addition of input card slots.

The L2MD series dropped the second RGB/YPbPr input from the input board in favor of using the option slots. So unlike the M series MD PVMs, the only advantage to an L2MD is the overscan button and RS232 interface that a regular L2 does not have. You don't get the bonus RGB/YPbPr input.

Common Repairs

  • Rapidly flashing neon bulb near flyback: Flyback failure is possible, you should pull the flyback out and test it with an external tester such as a Sencore HA2500. I have seen a failure case where the ABL (pin 11) shorted the primary winding, and caused the flyback to only produce HV when the ABL pin is floating (ungrounded). The flyback cannot be used this way and must be replaced.

Notes

OSD Service Menu can be accessed by pressing Menu, then Menu + Degauss.

It is normal for the OSD menu to be jumpy or twitchy.

Flyback Compatibility

All of the standard definition 14" and 20" L series PVMs use the same model of flyback transformer (NX-4525). This includes the PVM-14L1, 20L1, 14L2, and 20L2 (plus the medical and SSM variants). They are compatible with each other, so any model in the series can be used as the donor for another. However, the 14" models do not use the integrated focus pot, as the focus and screen voltages are generated elsewhere.

When transferring the flyback from a 14 to a 20" model, it is necessary to add a focus lead. This can be taken from the old flyback of the recipient monitor. If that isn't available, a length of solid core 20 gauge wire with a rating of 20 kV can be used. To install it, push it into the hole leading to the uppermost flyback pot and it should lock in place. It's important to use solid core wire, or else it may not fit securely.
