Summary
Curved set with a component input and a flatter, higher spec Thomson-RCA tube (VHP - Very High Performance), which is not prone to losing focus like the Thomson-RCA tube used in later 27" models. Also the last year to include horizontal width, trapezoid, and pincushion adjustments in a 27" D-series.

Notes
Display
- According to JVC, this TV has 700 lines of "Horizontal Resolution" which is a much higher measurement than TVL1.
- The Digital 2-Line Comb Filter has more artifacting than 3-Line comb filters in later models of the D-Series. Composite and RF would have far less artifacts in 240p if used with an external decoder sent to the component YPbPr input. This comb filter chip does not have vertical edge enhancement so there is no need to disable it.
- Component picture quality on this set can present extra gamma luminance errors at certain color transitions. See the aberrant darkened areas between color transitions on the right edges of the palm leaves in the gallery below. An RGB mod would avoid this.
- Horizontal linearity is prone to barrel distortion, which does not have an easy fix as horizontal s-correction is not adjustable.
- Red push is an increase in red saturation that was implemented to maintain more natural looking skin tones while still having a very blue white point. To disable it for the component input, change CMP D AX R to zero in the service menu. To disable it for the rest of the inputs, switch to input 1, 3, or the RF input and change DEMO AX RY to zero.
- The default sharpness level is so high that it causes noticeable ringing, and to be alleviated the sharpness must be turned down significantly in the user menu. See the section on Saving Picture Settings to save your adjustments.
Inputs
- The A/V input can be changed using the Menu button on the front panel, but a dedicated Input button on the remote makes it more convenient.
- Input 1 is a shared S-Video/Composite input on the rear, with S-Video priority (Composite will not work even if your S-Video signal source is turned off).
- Input 2 is either a Component input or a Composite input, on the rear. The "Component-In" toggle option in the menu determines which connection will be active.
- Input 3 is a single Composite input on the front.
Sound
- Two 5W front firing stereo speakers.
- "BBE High Definition Audio" and "Hyper Surround" makes the D-Series sound better than JVC's lower end consumer TV offerings at the time.
- The audio out RCA jacks on the rear support both Fixed and Variable audio (toggled in the menu).

Saving Picture Settings
Unlike most sets which automatically save changes made to the picture settings, changes made to the picture settings in the user menu will not save unless one first enters "SET VIDEO STATUS", makes the adjustments, and then selects "SAVE AS CHOICE".
In order to store changes made to the the picture settings in the user menu:
- First compare which color temperature you prefer by pressing the Video Status button on the remote, as this will be the starting point for your custom picture settings. Select 'Theater' if you would like a color temperature closer to reference 6500K, or 'Standard' to have a much more blue color temperature.
- Press Menu, then CH- until you reach "SET VIDEO STATUS" and press Vol+
- Make all your picture settings adjustments, and then scroll down to "SAVE AS CHOICE" and press Vol+
- After that, you can select Choice as the Video Status to recall your settings.
Selecting 'Choice' will have the same picture settings for all inputs. If you would like to customize the picture settings per input, then the way to go about this is to set the Video Status to Standard, and then customize each source in the service menu, as detailed here.
Repair Notes
- Subject pictured had the degauss circuit fail, resulting in splotchy colors depending on the set's orientation. Rectifier diode D926 had shorted (and one of its joints had cracking), which prevented the coil within the degauss relay from energizing. Replacing with NTE177 fixed it.
- Front composite input would only work intermittently due to a cold solder joint on the front input board jack. Reflowing fixed it.
