Notes

Similar to the Magnavox MSD513E, Symphonic RSMSD513E, Emerson EWC13D4, & Symphonic SC513DF. As such, since a remote with a "Picture" button is needed to adjust the picture settings, a replacement from any of the similar models listed on this page will work. Likewise, it should be compatible with the following S-Video mod.

First bring up the default DVD screen by pressing the eject button and note how much or little interference is present in the raster. This is to be a point of reference when it comes to wiring the video lines as they are prone to adding noticeable interference to the signal depending on their routing. There are four steps: 1. Implement video switch 2. Implement audio switch 3. Prevent audio amp from going into standby 4. Block DVD mute signal.

  1. The internal DVD player is connected to the jungle chip via S-Video. Cut pins 14 and 16 at CN1 on the bottom of the Main PCB where the DVD PCB slots into it using your preferred method of solder removal. Connect the cut lines and the input lines of your S-Video jack to a DPDT switch to toggle between the DVD video and the externally provided luma and chroma. Recommend very light gauge wire with brief heat on the pads of CN1 to avoid lifting. Connect and ground the Y/C ground lines to any cold ground point.

  1. To toggle between the internal DVD audio and externally provided audio, remove jumper wires C1748 and C1749. Connect those four audio lines and the externally provided audio to a DPDT switch. Connect and ground the L/R ground lines to any cold ground point. One could alternatively use a 4PST switch to toggle both the audio and video with one switch (instead of two DPDTs). 513df-s-audio-switch 20240401_123828

  2. Pin 2 of IC1801 is the mute/standby control that needs to be forced ON or else sound will not be heard unless a DVD is playing. Cut the existing trace of pin 2 where it meets the board and instead connect 5V from J1044 through a 1k resistor to keep the sound amp active even when a DVD isn't playing. 513df-standby-mute

  3. Pin 65 of the jungle chip IC1201 kills the volume level signal to the sound amp if a DVD isn't playing while on the DVD input. Cut the trace that connects to pin 65 to prevent the jungle chip from dropping the volume level when a DVD isn't playing. 513df-dvd-mute

Press Play or Eject to switch to the DVD/S-Video input after turning the set on. 20240403_103341
