As of this model year of D-Series, the component quality is excellent - superior to prior years which had more conspicuous gamma luminance errors. While this chassis is not readily RGB-moddable, the gains over component in this model year would be very marginal.

Notes

Unlike prior model years which would not save picture adjustments unless they were saved to the Choice mode, all picture adjustments for all modes are now automatically saved. Like many other sets, the default sharpness level is so high that it causes significant ringing, but it is easy to adjust/dial back in the user menu. To disable vertical edge enhancement, which artificially boosts the contrast on the vertical axis at transitions for composite and RF sources, set LYC02 to zero in the 3L Y / C sub-menu of the service menu.

The Theater mode is now the new "TheaterPro 6500K", and has a new dedicated button on the remote to switch to it.

TheaterPro 6500K Temperature Technology makes sure that the video you watch is set to that standard color temperature so that what you see is as true to what the film to video editors intended it to be.

It may come with either a tube made by Samsung or Thomson (previously RCA), as indicated by an S or R on the back label after the serial number. Both tubes have the same curvature and dot pitch, though the edges on the Thomson tubes may lose focus over time. The yoke is now bonded to the picture tube, which gets in the way of performing yoke adjustments such as tilt.

Conventional adjustable convergence rings are also absent, and there is no longer a separate power board. In addition to adjusting vertical position in the service menu with V PHASE, there is also an internal 3-position switch.

Composite 240p Performance

For composite decoding this set uses a Toshiba TC90A49P, a 3-line digital comb filter. Depending on the console/revision, dot artifacting ranges from slight to severe, and blending effects may be broken. If the set has a component YPbPr input on, then using a good external notch filter to decode composite instead (such as the one in a RetroTink) and sending that to the component input would blend all dithering patterns and remove nearly all dot artifacts (full guide here).
